Director of Education – Washington, DC

SUmmary: New position for an education
professional to work in a team environment to help shape and lead new
and existing programs. This is a mission-driven operating foundation which
seeks to educate community leaders about the power of architecture to
improve lives and transform the places where we live, learn, work, and
play. The Director of Education will help lead an effort to strengthen
the organization's role as a national resource in providing programs in
community design to local appointed and elected leaders.
As a primary objective of this position, the successful
candidate will focus on strengthening the Great Schools by Design program,
a national initiative which aims to improve the quality of America’s
public schools by promoting design excellence, encouraging collaboration
in the school design process, and providing leading-edge resources to
local leaders such as school superintendents, school boards and mayors.
The program also engages architects, teachers, parents, students, local
government officials, and other stakeholders through a variety of activities
and services. The aim of the program is to inform leaders about current
thinking in school design and empower them to see design as a part of
their leadership portfolio.
As a secondary objective, the successful candidate will support two other
leadership development initiatives: the Mayors Institute on City Design
and a newly developed sustainable design institute.
Responsibilities: The
position of Director of Education is a significant addition to the organization's
team and will oversee the development and implementation of all programs
offered within Great Schools by Design and assist the VP for Programs
in developing new programs and expanding existing programs based on various
needs assessments and collaborative efforts. Responsibilities will include
Develop and manage the annual program for Great Schools
by design including:
- Budget and staff development and management
- Coordination of new educational program committee
& other volunteer advisory groups
- Schedule, plan and manage 6 to 8 Institutes, Forums
and related events annually
- Increase association partnerships and maintain contact
with existing alliances
- Assist with fundraising as needed
- Produce written materials documenting program accomplishments
- Interface with communications staff on promoting
AAF programs
- Provide education/leadership develop expertise
to the Mayors’ Institute on City Design and a newly developed
sustainable design institute
Requirements:
- Bachelors degree required, Masters degree preferred.
- Minimum seven - ten years demonstrated experience
in an educational program development environment. Association or non-profit
experience strongly preferred.
- Experience working with volunteers, managing educational
committees, conducting needs assessments, and collaborating with speakers
and industry experts to develop educational programs.
- Ability to create, plan, direct and facilitate executive
level, small group, adult educational programs utilizing highly interactive
discussion formats.
- Strong interpersonal skills with ability to oversee
on-site programs and network with outside constituents.
- Excellent writing skills to draft executive summaries
of multi-day discussions.
- Demonstrated project management skills to balance
event logistics and pressing deadlines while managing key constituent
relationships.
- Demonstrated commitment to collaborative work philosophy
and with established team building skills.
- Knowledge of content areas a plus – (i.e.
- architecture, city planning, K-12 education, higher education, city
or school governance).
