About Senior Employment Resources (SER)

SER is primarily a volunteer organization dedicated to providing counseling, training, job searching resources and placement services to job seekers (clients), age 50 and older, who reside in certain jurisdictions in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. (Please review our eligibility requirements for details.) Since its founding in 1983, SER has helped over 10,500 job seekers obtain viable employment.

Does SER charge a fee to job seekers?

SER charges a $25 initial registration fee, payable by cash or check, at the time of your initial interview with SER. This entitles you to access SER's services and programs for a periond of 90 days. The initial registration fee is waived for residents of Fairfax County and/or career Federal civilian or military retirees who live in SER's service area. If you wish to remain actively registered with SER beyond the initial ninety (90) day registration period, there is a charge of twenty ($20) dollars for each additional ninety (90) day period. SER does charge nominal fees for certain software application training courses and extensive resume restructuring sessions.

SER services available to job seekers?

A new job seeker meets with a volunteer counselor to prepare a profile assessment of the job seeker’s employment background and existing skills profile to identify professional strengths as well as weaknesses that potentially impede the job seeker from successfully obtaining employment. Based on the assessment, specific SER services are identified and made available to the job seeker. Services include: Basic resume updating and revisions; Training seminars such as: Skills Assessment; Interviewing and Presentation Skills; Coping Assistance; Basic Computer Skills Training; and Job Searching Techniques on the Internet.

How does a job seeker register with SER?

Submit a client registration form. Either:

After SER receives your registration form, we will contact you to arrange for you to come to SER’s office and meet with a counselor.

SER counselors are volunteers who travel to SER to specifically conduct scheduled interviews and profile assessments. If, for some reason, you need to cancel an appointment or interview, please inform SER of the cancellation as soon as possible.

Normal office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
